Blue and Periwinkle

This is Blue the Hen and Periwinkle the Penguin - as named by Asher. Kristin felted these little buddies all by hand! She is so awesome. Asher and Kristin both built the nest with fresh grass from the yard. Such a sweet little family!

Ships in the night

Finally, summer is here. It's only just now begun, the longest days are here now...slow and leisurely sunsets, as though night will never arrive. Bright mornings and eternal dusks, the thick afternoons that seem to stand entirely still, moving only with the wind. As always, I envision grand adventures...deserted islands and buried treasure and trees heavy with tropical fruit...hidden hammocks in high branches, secret keys in gardens and magic portals beneath the swingset...the promise of love as clear as the coldest creek from my childhood.

Peruvian Opals - Jewel of the I

I just bought these stunning Peruvian opal earrings from Jewel of the I on Etsy (she's a local - Eugene!). Ever since I first saw a Peruvian opal on someone, I've been searching for some of my own. I still would love to find the perfect Peruvian opal ring...and in the meantime, these earrings are exactly what I need. Beautiful gold detail, and the stones are gorgeous and glowing. Thanks Rachel! You can shop Jewel of the I here, or check her blog here.

Skirts & bicycles

I took my bike out for my first real ride yesterday. Woohoo! I'm not talking like hours and hours and mountains or anything like that. I just rode it across town, picked Asher up, put him on the seat, and brought him home. I always get so nervous, that first ride of the year, all out in the open with ALL THOSE CARS so close to me. But I try to take the back roads where I can, and the feel of sun and sweat and wind and endless horizons is all so, so worth it.

And of course, one of my favorite springtime trends is all the beautiful girls on their bikes. Double-bonus for girls in dresses on bikes. What better way to celebrate the return of sunshine than riding around like a wildchild in a skirt? Le sigh. J'adore l'été!

The pregnancy sandwich

This was what I ate nearly every single day when I was pregnant. It is sooo good, so protein-packed, and so easy to adapt to your own tastes. Here's what I did:

On 2 slices of your favorite bread (I toasted it), spread butter and/or vegenaise, and then spread peanut or almond butter on one side. Add a fried egg, sliced tomato, avocado, and some fresh basil. Sprinkle salt and pepper as desired.

I can't really express how amazing this sandwich is. And when you're pregnant, calories are your very best friend. YUM!!

I first heard about this sandwich from a co-worker long ago who was one of those crazy triathalon nerds. Always on his bike or swimming or running, etc. He said his fave energy snack was fried egg, PB, and tomato sandwich. I adopted and adapted it, and it became the ultimate staple in my pregnancy diet.

Deliciousness

Finally made it to The Screen Door for brunch! See, having a small child makes me rather unwilling to face the weekend brunch crowds in Portland. Long waits, late eating times, lots of hungover people, etc.... all of that is just really hard to incorporate with my Sunday morning routine. But anyway, Anna and Kellee finally dragged me out, and it was a so killer. Once we satiated Asher with some enormous biscuit action, everyone was happy and amazingly well-fed. My mouth is watering at this very moment. Kellee's chicken & waffle dish was over. the. top.

p.s.

There is new stuff in my Etsy shop!

Cuteness abounds

Went to a trunk show at Melanie's yesterday to say hi, and she did a little henna dragon on Asher's arm. He was so excited about it. I tried to take a picture of the stain today, but he kept moving and so I didn't get a good shot. I did, however, get a good shot of the sweet wolf shirt I got him at the bins this week. Stylin little dude - vintage wolf shirt and dragon tattoo! So cute I could die!!!! (Click on the photos to enlarge).

To You

Whoever you are, I fear you are walking the walks of
dreams,
I fear these supposed realities are to melt from under your
feet and hands...

Whoever you are, now I place my hand upon you, that you
be my poem,
I whisper with my lips close to your ear,
I have loved many women and men, but I love none better
than you.

Rawr

Yowzers, totally loving this cheetah leotard/swimsuit over at Maiden Rapture Vintage. If only I wore this kind of stuff. I need to bring back my 6-year-old self. Unabashed leotard-wearing at all times of day, regardless of location.

Festival Cookies

Oh yes. The festival posts are not over, my friends. Hopefully I actually make it to a festival this year so that I can finally put all this festy-lust somewhere productive! Anyway, this recipe is one that I made often a few years ago. I made sure to bring a huge batch to any gathering I went to - cookies are such a fun treat to hand out, and these always hit the spot no matter what time of day it is.

So, start with your classic Nestle Toll House recipe, adapted as you like (you know, OG flour, whole wheat flour, maple syrup instead of brown sugar, etc., etc. Whatever your thing is, do it.) Or keep it as it is. I just use this recipe as my starting point for a lot of cookies. I usually add about 1/2 a cup of oats, and reduce the flour amount by that much to make room.

After the cookie dough is all mixed up, add (some combination of) the following:
  • Chocoloate chips
  • Shredded coconut
  • Chopped walnuts/pecans
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Hemp or flax seeds. Or sesame seeds.
  • Chopped candied ginger
  • Currants
The cookies are still dessert-y and delicious, but with all that extra stuff, they really do carry an extra protein and nutrition kick that is priceless when you've been dancing all night and the sun is coming up and breakfast is a million miles away.

DIY Pinup

I posted this on House of Vintage last night, but I am loving this pinup duplication. The photograph is a spitting image of the pinup! What a fun project this would be....

The Design

I just found this from a long time ago. I was trying to design a coat for my mom's friend Liza to make me. I'm still gonna manifest it one day!
